  1. Illuminating. I never paid much attention to statues as a child, but of course, as you point out they had an effect: George, the father of our country, Ben Franklin, the father of electricity and a moderating voice in the Constitutional Convention etc.

    In Philadelphia we just got rid of a statue of the brutal, racist, former mayor Frank Rizzo. In South Philadelphia the heartland of the Italian immigration, on the blank side wall of a building there is a large mural heroically depicting Rizzo. It has largely faded away to no public outcry. The South Philly neighborhoods are now riddled with Asians. A corner grocery store near we used live now features Vietnamese hoagies. I’ll bet they are delicious. healthier than our Italian ones.
